Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has shared her perspective on the challenges successful women face in relationships, particularly in the entertainment industry.
Speaking on Rubbing Minds on Channels Television on Sunday, March 3, 2025, Wright expressed her belief that many Nigerian men lack the ability to handle independent women. She opened up about her own experiences, revealing the struggles she faces in finding a compatible partner.
“To be sincere, you picture the right man coming to you, and most times, it’s a no because the men who believe they are right for you don’t approach you,” she stated. Wright further explained that many of the men who do show interest often have ulterior motives, such as seeking clout or financial gain.
“You can’t blame the women in the industry because these are the men that approach them,” she added, shedding light on the stereotypes and relationship dynamics that successful women in Nollywood often navigate.
She also spoke about the difficulty of finding men who can handle a relationship with a self-made woman. “Even when the right men come along, a lot of them don’t have what it takes to be with a self-made woman or a popular actress,” she noted. Wright pointed out that these men often struggle with jealousy, particularly regarding the success and public recognition of their partners. She questioned, “What exactly are they jealous about? Is it the fame or what? Because I see this happen a lot, and it has happened to me.”
The actress further stated that many Nigerian men, in her experience, are not ready for independent women. “I will say it again: Nigerian men are not ready for a self-made woman. I’m sorry if it comes across as an insult, but are you truly ready for an independent woman?” Wright challenged. She argued that relationships with strong, ambitious women require a certain level of acceptance and understanding. “If you want a woman who will completely submit to you, then maybe you should go to your village and marry someone without aspirations,” she said. “But if a woman has ambitions and you try to hold her back, she will rebel.”
Wright also took the opportunity to reflect on the time she spent away from the screen, explaining that motherhood and the responsibilities of parenting had kept her busy.
